scaleway: why i joined
a few months ago, i was looking for a new job. i had a few companies in mind, and Scaleway was one of them.
Scaleway is a European cloud provider and a hyperscaler wannabe. that ambition was a big part of why i applied.
the hyperscaler part
to me, competing with the hyperscalers means getting five things right:
- massive infrastructure
- high availability
- elastic scaling
- global reach
- advanced services
when i applied, the direction was clear. so were the two biggest gaps: global reach and the service catalog.
Scaleway’s public cloud regions are concentrated in Europe. you can use the services from elsewhere, of course, but having infrastructure close to customers around the world is a different problem.
then there’s the catalog. put Scaleway next to AWS and there’s still a lot to catch up on. i think we can close that gap over the next few years. building a global presence looks like the harder part to me.
why Europe, why now
but two things make me optimistic about our chances in the European market:
- there’s room for a European alternative with the reach and services of the US hyperscalers. i think Scaleway has one of the best chances of getting there.
- sovereignty is becoming a real reason to choose a provider, and Trump’s policies are helping make the case.
on june 12, 2026, the US government ordered Anthropic to restrict access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for foreign nationals. Anthropic ended up suspending both models for everyone.
Fable 5 became available globally again on july 1. still, the point stands: access to a tool you depend on can disappear because of a decision made in another country.
my bet is simple. if a European provider can match the services companies need from US hyperscalers, being European could be the advantage that wins the contract.
and we’re already seeing signs of it. on july 16, 2026, Airbus selected Scaleway to host selected critical applications as part of its sovereign cloud strategy. that’s a serious vote of confidence.
my part in this
that was a long introduction. now, lucky me, i already had friends working at Scaleway.
i won’t go through the whole hiring process. four video calls: HR, a technical interview, my future team, and my manager’s manager. i passed.
i joined the Domain Team to bring my Go experience to building a modern domain registrar. a small part of that bigger ambition, and plenty of work ahead.
